Polar bear launches surprise attack on seal

Buy video

This incredible scene showed a rarely seen instance of a polar bear ambushing a seal from the water.

The bear swam under the ice and emerged next to the seal, grabbing its hind flippers in its jaws. The seal swung away from the bear, dragging it across the pack ice and into an adjacent ice hole.

The bear lost its grip on the seal and emerged shortly afterwards, climbed out of the ice hole with difficulty, then left.

The Polar Bear, Ursus maritimus, is the top predator in the Arctic. The males choose to spend most of their lives on the pack ice in the high Arctic, hunting seals, which are their main prey.

The clip was filmed in the north-east of the Svalbard archipelago, on August 1, 2017.
