Walrus (Odobenus rosmarus) are the largest seal-like mammals in the European Arctic. They are very tactile animals and lie in close contact with each other when basking. This male had recently emerged from the cold sea - his neck skin is pink and puckered. He attempted to force his way into the group of basking males, but failed, and had to content himself with lying at the edge of the group. He got as close as he could to the other males, then rolled and lay down.
