Walrus (Odobenus rosmarus) are the largest seal-like mammals in the European Arctic. They are very tactile animals and lie in close contact with each other when basking. This male had recently emerged from the cold sea - his neck skin is pink and puckered. He attempted to force his way into the group of basking males, but failed, and had to content himself with lying on the end of the group. He rolled over, then scratched himself with a rear flipper. The male Walrus group was basking on the warm beach at Kapp Lee on Edgeøya in the Svalbard Archipelago.
