Beautiful Red-eared Firetails (Stagonopleura oculata) are the only species of native finch found in the extreme south-west of Western Australia, and they occur nowhere else. They are shy, secretive, unobtrusive birds that mostly feed on seeds on the ground, although they also take small insects. Males and females have similar plumage, although the male has a more intense red on the patch behind its eye and more black feathers around its face. Red-eared Firetails are uncommon, and are found in eucalypt forests, paperbark swamps and dense heaths, usually close to water. Unlike other Estrildid finches, Red-eared Firetails are usually solitary or in pairs. In this video, the male is shown for the first 1 minute 8 seconds, followed by the female.
