A brush fire broke out in the evening of July 8 in Altamont, east of San Francisco, the low visibility forcing the closure of the east and westbound lanes of the Interstate 580.

This video, shot by Jeremy Scott who was driving with his three children in the car, shows thick smoke and flames on both sides of the freeway.

"As long as we keep moving, the fire can't hurt us," Scott is heard saying.

According to local media, passengers in their cars could feel the heat and hear the crackling of the fire from inside their vehicles. Much of the hillside had also turned black.

The westbound lanes were reopened at around 7 pm, about an hour after the fire was reported.
