A lucky tourist on a whale watching tour off Mauritius captured a sperm whale giving birth on his underwater camera.

The footage, captured with an underwater camera, shows the moment a sperm whale gives birth with several other whales surrounding her.

The filmer, Jamie Hughes, writes: ''There were about 5 of us on a small boat watching the sperm whales.

''I hung off the side off the boat to put my camera under the water.

''It was at arms length and with the boat bobbing on the water it was difficult to keep the camera under the whole time.

''The boat captain said something like 'the whale has just given birth'.

''We couldn’t really see what was going on but we did notice several of the large whales pushing a small whale to the surface.

''We had no idea what we caught on camera and watched it when we got back to the accommodation.''

The clip was filmed in July, 2017.
