Mass burials have begun for the hundreds of victims of the earthquake and tsunami that hit the Indonesian city of Palu.

Footage captured yesterday (October 1) in the city on the island of Sulawesi shows rescue workers laying down bodies in the 10-by-100 meter trench.

According to Indonesia's National Disaster Mitigation Agency, burials must be performed as quickly as possible to avoid disease.

The victim's photographs have been taken in order to help relatives locate their burial location.

The official death toll from Friday's double disaster was today increased from 844 to 1,234.

In a desperate attempt to stave off the spread of disease in the devastated region, Indonesia's national disaster mitigation agency authorised the burials to proceed as soon as possible.

All of the victims, coming from local hospitals, have been photographed to help families locate where their relatives are buried.
