Indonesian barbers took out their clippers for a charity event to help victims of the Palu earthquake and tsunami.

Hairdressers in Bukittinggi, Sumatra, gathered at a local pavilion to offer haircuts in exchange for donations to the relief effort for the stricken region of north-west Sulawesi on October 7 and 8.

Customers give between 20,000 and 100,000 Rupiah (£1 to £5) per haircut which acts as a donation, says 26-year-old barber Fedly, from Kroonz Barber Shop in the city.

The movement is part of a wider effort among Indonesian citizens to raise funds for the disaster-stricken area.

Up to 2,000 people are believed to have died in the double tragedy on September 28, with 5,000 more missing.

Fundraising was titled "Caring for Palu-Donggala, Central Sulawesi - Shaving paid hair properly" held on the stage of sports entertainment at Wirabraja, Jendral Sudirman street, Bukittinggi, Indonesia.

Dozens of hairdressers from the Barber Shop community brought their shaving equipment to serve the charity while cutting their hair. Customers can also determine the desired hairstyle such as when cutting hair at the Barber Shop usually.

Fedly, 26, a haircutter from Kroonz Barber Shop, said the action for two days, Sunday and Monday October 7-8.

In collecting these funds, customers pay for haircut services under the normal tariff, starting from 20,000 rupiah to above the normal price of 100,000 rupiah per person or about 1 to 5 pounds.

"All the funds collected were donated through the charity to victims of the earthquake and tsunami disaster in Palu and Donggala, Central Sulawesi," Fedly said.

Until Monday afternoon, another social action concerned with the Palu earthquake was also carried out by students and community organizations to reduce the burden of disaster victims.
