The Australian Pelican (Pelecanus conspicillatus) occurs widely on inland and coastal waters of Australia and New Guinea. It is the only pelican found in Australia, and is medium-sized for a pelican, weighing between 4-13 kilograms (8.8 to 28 pounds) with a wingspan up to 2.6 metres (8.5 feet). Australian Pelicans feed mainly on fish by plunge-diving while swimming, often fishing cooperatively. They also sometimes eat other birds such as Silver Gulls and ducklings, and often steal prey from other waterbirds such as cormorants. This bird was one of several Australian Pelicans fishing and loafing at the mouth of the Denmark River at Wilson Inlet on the south coast of Western Australia.
