This is the heartwarming moment kind passers-by rescued a wild sloth they found clinging for dear life to rocks after being wash down a river in Panama.

The group of resort workers spied the stricken creature by JungleWood Falls after it was swept down the Mamoní River in March 2019.

They described the animal as "scared, wet and hungry."

Using a large stick, they hauled the creature away from the river bank and into a nearby tree.

As the sloth started to climb slowly up the branches, it turned to look directly at its rescuers with an expression only the most cold-hearted of viewers would not interpret as gratitude.

"Happy sloth!" said one of the rescuers.
