The heaviest monsoon rains in a decade have struck Mumbai and nearby areas, killing over 30 people as of today (July 3) and dramatically affecting the livelihood of most, according to reports.

After nearly 16 inches of rain fell Monday (July 1) in some areas, several parts of the city became overrun in waist deep water. Local train and bus services have been disrupted, with schools and colleges were closing as well. Nearly 50 flights were canceled from Mumbai airport, where a SpiceJet plane overshot the runway.

The rains led to the collapse of three walls, which caused most of the deaths, according to reports. A municipal wall in a Mumbai slum killed 21 when it fell. Six died after another wall collapsed in Pune, and three died after one fell in Thane, a suburb of Mumbai.

It was the second heaviest rainfall in Mumbai in the last 45 years, Maharashtra’s chief minister, Devendra Fadnavis, said in a tweet. In just three days, the city and its more than 20 million residents have endured more rain than they typically do during the entire month of June, he wrote.

At least 26 people have died in rain-related incidents in Mumbai as heavy rains lashed parts of the city Tuesday. In Malad East, a wall collapsed on hutments early this morning in Kurar’s Pimpripada area, leaving 21 people dead. The death toll is expected to increase as many are feared stuck under debris. In Kalyan, the wall of a school collapsed on an adjoining residential structure, killing three persons. Two men died in a closed car in Malad, after the car drowned near a subway.

The Maharashtra government declared a public holiday in Mumbai Tuesday after the India Meteorological Department (IMD) predicted heavy to extremely heavy rainfall in the city. Schools and colleges will remain closed today, and officials have advised people to avoid leaving their homes.
