A Los Angeles County Sheriff’s deputy shot and killed a man in his 20s during a gunfire exchange following a traffic stop early Thursday (August 1) morning in the South L.A. neighborhood of Hyde Park, while a second suspect was at large.

The moment captured here is a public information officer being interviewed about the matter.

The shooting occurred at around 1 a.m. after the deputy pulled over an SUV for a code violation at the intersection of Brynhurst Avenue and 71st Street, according to the sheriff’s department.

A man in the front passenger seat of the SUV got out and tried to walk away. When the deputy ordered him to stop, the suspect first ignored his commands, then pulled out a handgun and opened fire on the deputy, LASD reports.

The deputy returned fire, hitting the suspect in the chest and lower torso. The suspect died at the scene. The deputy was not hurt. The suspect’s gun was recovered at the scene.

The driver of the SUV, described as a black man between 20 and 25 years old, sped away in the tan-colored SUV and remains at large. Deputies had shut down an approximately three-block radius around the shooting scene.

LASD issued a warning for morning commuters to avoid the area of Crenshaw Boulevard and Florence Avenue.

No names were immediately released.
