Mekong River at 50-year low due to drought and dams

Buy video

The Mekong River, also known as the Lancang in China, is experiencing reduced water levels to a critical extent. Long stretches have seen the level falling to about one metre, the lowest level in fifty years. Sandbanks are impeding navigation and fishing is being disrupted. There is little traffic on the river and chinese freighters either stuck or abandoned. Drought is blamed for the reduction along with dams in China and Laos. Cambodia has announced it will not construct any dams for the next ten years. China's Jinghong dam in Yunnan province controls most of the flow. The Xayaburi dam in Laos supplies most of its electricity to Thailand.( Multiple sources including Mekong River Commission)
