Police personnel rescued two girls stranded in the middle of a river when a high tide led to a rising water level in central India's Madhya Pradesh.

The incident took place at Pench river in Belkhedi village of Chhindwara city of the eponymous district on July 23.

According to reports, a group of six to eight girls defied the lockdown restrictions and visited the place for a picnic excursion.

Following this, they sat on a stone in the middle of the river to get the 'perfect selfie'.

However, owing to heavy rainfall, the water level rose rapidly leaving the two girls stranded amid the river.

The others on the group panicked and alerted the police department officials.

The police and the local administration along with the gram panchayat acted swiftly and rushed to the spot to rescue the girls.

Among the girls trapped, Megha Jaware Kar, who lives in ward number 3 of Junnardeo Dungaria and Vandana Tripathi, a resident of ward number 2.

The video shows the two girls precariously standing on top of a rock amid the fast-flowing water current in the river.

A group of policemen can be seen using sticks and ropes while wading through the water to reach the girls.

Following this, they secured the girls and brought them ashore safely.

Sources suggest the girls were stranded amid the river for at least one hour before the police personnel could rescue them.

The rescue operation took place with the help of Police In-charge SK Singh, Police Officer Incharge Rajendra Singh Bisen, and constable Nitesh Raghuvanshi, Rakesh Chaure, Ravi, Kapoor Chand, Ajit, and trainee DSP Shri Waghmare.
