A Ticking Timebomb in the Thames - SS Richard Montgomery shipwreck, UK

Following the Beirut disaster, many have wondered if something similar could happen in the UK.

The 75 year old WWII shipwreck of the SS Richard Montgomery lies in the Thames 1.5 miles north of Sheerness and is estimated to have sunk with 1,400 tons of TNT packed onboard, which successive Governments have generally left to fate.

Experts believe the wrecked American liberty ship could break up in a storm or collision with a ship with potentially fatal consequences, on a scale similar to the Beirut blast.

Footage of the shipwreck taken from a boat this afternoon (August 10) at mid-tide.
