Animal rights activities hold a protest in Seoul, South Korea, on August 16, against the consumption of dog meat.

In their most recent rally, protesters accused governor Yoo Cheon Ho of failing to shut down illegal dog farms in the country.

"I am waiting to here at the county office to meet with the governor. I want to ask him how many dogs he has eaten, said Nami Kim, founder of the Save Korean Dogs Organization.

South Korea historically regard dogs as edible farm animals. The meat is especially popular during 'boknal' the hottest days of the year.

Though today the majority of South Koreans do not consume dog meat, some still do. An estimated one million dogs are killed and eaten every year.

In Ganghwa Island County, Incheon City, there are more 250 dog farms. According to activists, the dogs are ''tortured their entire lives'' and ''end up being slaughtered in the most inhumane ways''.
