Bizarre public toilets with transparent glass that turns opaque when someone uses them have been built in front of a train station in Japan.

Tokyo Toilet Project, the non-profit organisation behind the strange toilets, installed the first batches of the transparent toilets in the Yoyogi Fukamachi Mini Park near Shibuya train station in Tokyo.

The organisation said: "There are two things we worry about when entering a public restroom, especially those located at a park. The first is cleanliness, and the second is whether anyone is inside."

To address that, the non-profit employed architect to design a toilet with glass outer walls that becomes opaque when the lock is closed, and returns to being transparent when vacant.

At night, the facility lights up the park like a beautiful lantern. The project was developed by 16 Japanese architects.
