At least 10 pilot whales have washed up dead after becoming beached when the tide came in on western Iceland's Álftafjördur.

Distressing footage from September 13 shows the partially submerged animals lifeless in the water as their fins protruded the surface.

It was concluded that the pod of whales were in a fjord and became beached due to the tide, rendering the mammals trapped.

Two of the whales survived the ordeal.

Pilot whales are known for hunting in shallow waters and it isn't unique for them to be trapped in low tides.

just a few days before they were in the same fjord, happily feeding and swimming in this fjord. ( see earlier video posts ).

but the shallow waters are often a trap for them. As the tide goes low they get trapped and die.

This was a pod of 10 beautiful pilot whales, with a newborn baby.

They were found dead , stranded, in a fjord named Álftafjördur , south of Stykkisholmur in Snaefellsnes peninsula, western Iceland.

it is especially heartbreaking to see the baby, lifeless.

Two of the whales did not get stranded and are seen swimming nearby. They have huge family bonds and stay with their pod no matter what. It is uncertain if they will survive as they may also get stranded with the next low tides. And by themselves it will be very difficult to find food as they usually hunt in group. The only hope is that they leave the shallow fjord before they also get stranded and they find another pod of whales that would accept them in their family to unite.

apparently it is rather commonn for pilot whales to hunt in shallow waters and accidentally get stranded and trapped by low tide.
