On the wee hours of September 13 morning, forest department officials rescued a one-month-old elephant calf who was swept by a flash flood in southern India's Kerala.

The visual came out of Chokkad in Malappuram district’s Nilambur.

According to reports, locals came outside their houses hearing a loud thud, only to see the elephant trying to stay afloat in the water.

They alerted the forest officials who rushed to the spot to rescue the calf.

Armed with ropes, the forest officials rescued the elephant calf and managed to bring it to the banks of the river.

The video shows several officials guiding the elephant to safety, while it seems visibly terrified by the incident.

The baby elephant could be seen crying, probably from the shock of being drifted by the water body.

The calf can be seen trying to resist the efforts made by the officials to rescue it.

Sources suggest the baby elephant drifted about one kilometre downstream before it somehow managed to reach near the banks of the river.

After walking for a few metres, the baby jumbo was transported in a vehicle to the nearest forest under the Nilambur South Division.

According to reports, the forest department officials released the elephant into the forest.
