Artists in South Africa are demanding the government to provide the arts and entertainment with financial assistance during the country's coronavirus lockdown.

Vicky Sampson, a representative for Trade Union for Musicians of South Africa, is calling on President Cyril Ramaphosa to apply legislation that will benefit the music industry.

Malvern Du Bruyn, provincial secretary of Congress of South African Trade Unions, said the call by the artists and entertainment industry is a just call and the trade union federation is in full support of them.

Groups from various artist unions protested outside South Africa's Parliament demanding that the government provide better financial assistance to artists and workers in the entertainment industries, who have been affected by the country's Covid 19 lockdown.

South Africa has been under a Covid 19 lockdown since March, and part of the lockdown restrictions prohibits public events of more than 50 people. Government has set up Covid 19 fund to assist artists, however, artists claim that the criteria for accessing the funds are too onerous.

Vicky Sampson, the famous singer of "My African Dream" and now a representative union TUMA (Trade Union for Musicians of South Africa), says they are calling on President Cyril Ramaphosa to enact legislation that will benefit those in the music and entertainment industries. TUMA is an affiliate of COSATU (Congress of South African Trade Unions), South Africa's largest trade union federation.

Malvern Du Bruyn, provincial secretary of COSATU in the Western Cape said the call by the artists and entertainment industry is a just call and the trade union federation is in full support of them.
