This is the moment brave rescuers carried a baby along a zipline over a raging river as tropical depression Vicky battered the Philippines.

Families were trapped when flash floods gushed through their homes in New Bataan, Davao de Oro, province, on Friday (Dec 18).

Footage shows how a heroic rescue worker risked his life to swim through the muddy torrent to reach the bank on the other side of the river, where he pitched the zip line.

Other members of the team were then able to transport the children to safety by strapping them to their bodies as they used the zipline over the water. They went back several times to collect other villagers in the region, also known as the Compostela Valley.

Teacher Elaine Pagsac, who lives nearby, said everyone was able to cross safely.

She said: ''Everyone was shocked in the morning when the river came flowing through the village. Our neighbours were stranded and called for help.''

Storm Vicky battered several provinces in the southern Philippines with flash floods and landslides forcing mass evacuations.

The storm made landfall in Davao Oriental, but the weather state bureau said Vicky is expected to continue to dump heavy rain until Sunday (Dec 20).
