A dad in Canada came across methane bubbles underneath the frozen lake near his home in Quebec province - then set them alight.

The clip, filmed on a frozen Lake Champlain on December 18, shows David Freiheit - aka popular YouTuber VivaFrei - explaining to his kids why the bubbles appear. The icy phenomenon happens when bacteria from algae expel methane gas. This causes the large white bubbles to be suspended under the ice on lakes and ponds. He then makes a whole in the ice before setting the gas alight with a match.

The lake froze over before any snow fell. And as we were skating on it, we saw the most amazing bubble patterns forming under the ice. From what I understand, it is actually methane bubbles from decomposing matter beneath the ice bubbling up. Truly fascinating.
