Amazing GoPro footage reveals what inside half a metre of ice covering a lake in Ontario looks like.

Noah Bacal captured this incredible footage of white ice atop a thick layer of clear ice on Macdonald Lake in Haliburton.

Noah said: "The ice was about 40cm thick in total, with about 20cm of snow sitting on top. That day was -10 degrees Celsius.

"We were measuring the thickness of the different ice layers by drilling through with an auger. This was the last hole of the day, so I stuck my GoPro down the hole to see what it would look like!"

This footage was filmed on January 31.

Noah also described how the white ice forms with many trapped air bubbles, causing it to appear cloudy. Clear ice forms with very few air bubbles and is much stronger than white ice.
