A UNESCO project in Mafraq, Jordan, has employed locals and refugees to meticulously restore ruins across the city.

Footage from March 10 shows staff armed with tweezers and brushes carefully uncovering and restoring a beautiful mosaic on the floor amongst the ruins of a church.

The heritage conservation project, financed by Germany, aims to employ 300 people in the Rihab region, half being Jordanian and the rest being Syrian refugees.

Restoring the ruins of Rihab in the Mafraq governorate is a project that will create 9,000 job opportunities across the Kingdom, including 150 vacancies in the Rehab district 50 percent of which will be filled by Jordanians and 50 percent by Syrian refugees also employ people with disabilities to restore the antiquities found in the region including three churches through direct implementation by the German Corporation for International Cooperation (GIZ) in cooperation with UNESCO to preserve the antiquities and prepare them to be admired by tourists in the future, and to involved women who chose to work to make a living, in jobs that many perceive as exclusive to men, to prove that women are ‘half of society’ and there is nothing that they cannot do.
