A swollen river submerged a bridge, trapping residents in the Philippines on Monday (April 11).

Ryan Uy was about to cross the bridge with neighbors when there was a sudden flash flood in Calinan, Davao City.

Residents say they had to wait for an hour before the water receded, but the bridge was still submerged under muddy water when they could finally cross.

Uy said: "We thought it was just going to be a regular summer storm, but the rain was too heavy, and some of us were stranded when we went outside."

The Davao region in the southern Philippines experienced heavy rains and thunderstorms last weekend due to easterly winds blowing from the Pacific.

Officials from the Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office had distributed relief goods to 1,130 affected families in the region.
