Hundreds of passengers were left stranded when an overflowing river submerged the road.

The travellers were onboard six buses that were supposed to cross the Paliwan River in Antique province, the Philippines on May 30.

But the raging body of water quickly ate through the access road - built as a temporary route after the main bridge was destroyed by typhoons last year - forcing them to travel on boats.

Footage shows the massive river washing away large logs from the mountains into the submerged road. The travellers were forced to embark the buses and cross the river on fishing vessels.

Resident Mapet Dalisay said: ‘We hope the bridge can be repaired soon so we don't experience this again. The rainy season is coming soon.'

Kind local fishermen, with the help of local authorities, helped the stranded passengers cross the river on their boats.

At least ten fishing boats were placed in the area to move people.

Antique Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction and Management (PDRRM) officer Broderick Train said: ‘As a temporary remedy, the fishing boats will ply the commuters until such time that the water will subside. We limit three to four passengers per boat.'
