Cars drove through flooded roads after a heavy summer storm hit northeastern Thailand today (May 3).

Footage shows the vehicles slowly wading across the muddy deluge in Khon Kaen province.

Some of the affected motorists were stranded while waiting for the water to recede after at least three kilometres of road were submerged.

The flood also caused a traffic jam as most roads were unpassable due to the heavy flow of water.

One of the local officials said they had to spend at least two hours fixing and unclogging the drain to help ease the traffic that day.

Khun Ton said: ‘The rain started in the morning and only stopped around 2 pm. We spent two hours removing trash from the clogged drains which resulted in at least a knee-deep flood.’

The central part of the province had suffered severe flooding in the past as rainwater gather in low-lying areas during the storm.

The local government evaluated the damages caused by the flood and provided subsidies to those who were affected.

Thailand and other countries in Southeast Asia such as Malaysia and Indonesia are approaching their tropical monsoon rainy season. Soaring temperatures reaching 35 degrees Celsius are often followed by powerful tropical storms with thunder, lightning, rain and flash floods.
