A riot police water cannon puts out a vehicle fire at anti-government protests in Bangkok, Thailand on Saturday 7 August.

Protesters are demanding the government resign for mishandling the pandemic and its economic effects.

Some also want greater democracy. The prime minister, former general Prayut Chan-o-cha, was first installed in a military coup in 2014 and has used constitutional change and the courts to hang on to power since.

Only 6% of Thais are fully vaccinated and Bangkok is under lockdown, with a night-time curfew and a ban on gatherings of more than five people.
