Traffic officials in Jakarta, Indonesia, are enforcing an odd-even car numberplate policy on major roads.

Footage filmed on 12 August showed them enforcing the rule, in which eight major roads are restricted to vehicles with odd or even-numbered licence plates, depending on the day, between 6am and 8pm local time.

The policy is an attempt to cut down activity in the city as it battles a Covid-19 wave. But without halting things completely.

So-called Level 4 Community Activity Restrictions (PPKM) have been extended until extended through August 16.

The policy, which restricts certain roads for vehicles with odd-numbered license plates on odd-numbered dates and vice versa, is part of the Jakarta administration’s efforts to negotiate a fine balance between imposing strict mobility curbs and allowing crucial economic activities to continue, in the midst of the COVID-19 public health emergency.

The restrictions would be imposed on eight major thoroughfares in the city from Aug. 12 to 16, between 6 a.m. and 8 p.m.
