Rescue workers in Indonesia completed a dramatic nighttime operation to save seven teenage boys who had become trapped in raging floods.

Video shows firefighters in the vicinity of the capital of Indonesia's West Sumatra province, Padang City, pulling the youths to safety in heavy rain and under torchlight on Wednesday night (September 29).

The Padang City search and rescue ream are seen using a system of pulleys that had been hoisted over a gushing and overflowing river to pull the boys to safety.

According to one local report, the boys had been swimming in the river in the afternoon, becoming trapped on a small “island” before the flood hit.

In an interview, head of rescue operations Abdurahman said: “The seven teenagers had been trapped for three hours from afternoon to night; it took an hour and a half before the seven teenagers were rescued and handed over to their families.

Non-stop heavy rain hit Padang all day on Wednesday, triggering landslides on the provincial highway and stopping traffic, Abdurahman added.
