Footage show on Sunday 20 February showed the passion that people in Payakumbuh in Indonesia's West Sumatra have for horse racing.

Like many such races in the area, this one is thronging with punters.

Attending also comes with few restrictions. There is no fence between the crowd and the racing horses around much of the track. In some places people even stand on the edge of the track itself.

Sometimes, when there is an accident on the track, as in this race, spectators get involved in helping medics.

Sometimes spectators can be injured too, though none were on this occasion.

Despite the hazards, it is a popular event for jockeys and punters alike. The prize for winning a race reaches 12m rupiah (835 USD) -- a significant sum for people from the area.

Payakumbuh people really like racing. There is also a horse race here. There is a racetrack in this city. If there is a race, the audience must be full. they are free to roam where they like along the track. there is no fence between the track and them..
The officers are also overwhelmed with managing spectators who can't be ordered to order.. they can just be on the track when the horses are racing.
some even encouraged the horse to run faster.
when there is an accident on the track everyone wants to help. they ran together across the track. the race isn't over yet.
It is no longer clear where the officers and spectators are. more terrible there are also people selling on the track...OMG !
however, the prize for one race reaches Rp 12 million, equivalent to $ 900, a big number for Payakumbuh people.
miraculously even in such a situation, there was no accident to the spectators during the race
