A group of Muslim students have protested after a college in Kolar banned the hijab.

Footage from February 16 shows the female students marching through the streets.

The students were turned away from Government Girls College after management claimed hijabs and burkas did not match new uniform rules.

According to local reports, groups of students have boycotted their exams.

A group of Muslim girls went on a protest after their college banned hijab in Kolar in southern India.

The girls turned up at the Government Girls college, where they study, on February 16 wearing burkas and hijabs. The college management sent them out saying the new uniform rules did not allow them to wear either.

The girls argued in vain and then marched on the road shouting slogans.

Speaking to reporters the girls said education and freedom of religion were fundamental rights under the Indian constitution and they would fight for them.

Hijab has become a controversial issue in Karnataka, a southern province ruled by the Hindu right wing Bharatiya Janata Party.

Many colleges changed uniform rules in the middle of the current academic and banned hijab, allegedly under pressure from Hindu right wing groups.
