Five people were killed while 12 others were injured after a train crashed into a tourist bus in Indonesia.

Plastic shop workers were going on a vacation trip when the incident happened in Tulungagung Regency, East Java Province, on Sunday February 27.

The first company bus was able to pass by the railway tracks that had no barrier safely but the second bus was not as lucky as the train slammed onto the middle of the vehicle.

Four workers instantly died on the scene while 13 were rushed to the hospital but one of them later died due to severe brain injury. The 12 others who were injured were still being treated at Dr Iskak Hospital.

Tulungagung Police Chief Adjunct Senior Commissioner Handono Subiakto said: ‘Four people died at the crash site. One other person died while receiving medical treatment at the hospital.’

He added that the driver of the second bus Septianto Dani Setiawan reportedly tried to speed up the bus and beat the train but failed.

He said: ‘A witness said that the second bus’ driver tried to speed up the train but it was still hit with a forceful impact.’

Due to the impact, the bus flung 10metres away from the tracks. He said: ‘The tail of the bus was hit, and the bus bounced 10metres away. It also turned 180 degrees facing west.

‘It is suspected that the driver lacked concentration while crossing so the train was hit.’

The 12 others in the hospital were still in the emergency room with two of them in critical condition. All of those who were killed were reportedly seated behind the driver, while the driver survived.

The three Harapan Jaya tourist bus departed a plastic shop and was heading for Jawa Timur Park 5 in Malang City for a company trip.

Investigations on the incident are still ongoing.
