A woman has died after a bus

ploughed into a city centre cafe, injuring 11 other people.

Almena Amica, 77, died in hospital after the single decker struck the T4 bubble tea cafe in the Piccadilly Gardens area of the city centre on Monday afternoon.

The bus driver, 64, was arrested at the scene on suspicion of causing injury by dangerous driving. Police said today (Tues) that he's been bailed.

Emergency services flooded the scene after the single decker crashed into a row of shops at the base of City Tower, a 30 storey building in the heart of the city centre.

Almena, who was known as Mena to her family and friends, was rushed to hospital with serious injuries but sadly later died.

In a statement issued by police, her heartbroken family said: "Mena was dedicated to her family, friends and faith."

"She loved music, gardening, TV soaps and nature. She was the senior member of our family, the eldest sister and great-great-aunt. "

"She was well-loved, our matriarch, and her presence will be hugely missed."

"Mena was a private person and her family asks that this be respected during our time of mourning. We thank all the services and people who came to her aid."

Eleven other people, both pedestrians and bus passengers, were either treated at the scene or in hospital for minor injuries, police said.

Sergeant Louise Warhurst said: "This was a tragic incident witnessed by a lot of people in a busy area of the city centre."

"The investigation is progressing thanks to many calls with information received from the public."

Witnesses are urged to come forward.
