Police in eastern India's West Bengal arrested two people after catching them with a kangaroo.

The incident took place on March 12 in Barobisha in Alipurduar district of the state.

Visuals showed the marsupial lying in the cage, after it was being rescued by cops.

According to reports, the police intercepted a truck after deeming it suspicious and recovered the kangaroo. Two people, identified as Imran Sheikh and Zayed Sheikh, residents of southern India's Telangana, were arrested.

The animal, endemic to Australia, was being smuggled in a cage and transported using the truck.

On Sunday, March 13, the two alleged smugglers were produced at the Alipurduar court, where they said that the Kangaroo was being transported to Kamla Nehru Prani Sangrahalaya in Indore, Madhya Pradesh. They said that they had received the animal from a person in Mizoram- a state in northeastern India. The duo were able to produce a document that matched their claims.

While the court sent to three-day police custody, they ordered the police and forest department to verify the authenticity of the document produced by the duo. The next hearing is set for March 16.

Currently, the kangaroo has been translocated to the Alipore Zoological Garden in Kolkata.
