Muslims in Agam regency, Indonesia, gathered for a moon-viewing event on April 3 to mark the start of Ramadan.

After spotting the moon, the devotees will begin their fasting on April 4.

Hundreds of Muslims from the Indonesian Syathariah congregation gathered on the side of a rice field road to determine the start of the fasting month of Ramadan 1443 Hijriyah, 2022.

Footage filmed in Agam district, on Sunday afternoon April 3, shows the head of the congregation leading the reckoning takwim procession or looking at the moon to determine the time for the start of Ramadan this year.

Chairman of the West Sumatra Syathariah, Tuangku Ismet Ismail, said after successfully seeing the moon in the sky, the Syathariah congregation confirmed that they would start fasting on Monday, April 4.

"The Hilal has been seen and we will carry out the fast of Ramadan in 1443 Hijriyah tomorrow, Monday," Ismet said.

The procession to see the moon by pilgrims is also carried out in several other locations in the hills, on the beach, and in the open field..

The decision of this tarekat congregation is different from the Indonesian government which has set 1 Ramadan on Sunday, April 3, 2022.
