The anti-immigration group known as Operation Dudula (Dudula is a Zulu word meaning push away or repel) launched its Cape Town branch. A few hundred supporters gathered at Hanover Street and marched through the Cape Town CBD. The group was started by Nhlanhla “Lux” Dlamini who shot to fame during South Africa’s civil unrest in July 2020. Dlamini together with other armed community members protected malls in Soweto from looters.

The group has become notorious for their anti-foreigner sentiments. Dlamini himself is facing criminal charges after allegedly assaulting a foreigner during a raid at a suspected drug dealer’s home. The left wing EFF (Economic Freedom Fighters), led by Julius Malema has spoken out against the actions of Dlamini and the Dudula group.

The group’s treasurer-general who identified himself as “Kruger” has issued a warning to foreigners to leave or they will shut the country down. South Africa has sporadic outbreaks of Xenophobic violence e since 2008.
