The teacher, Xu Shanghui, had introduced an earthquake evacuation protocol so the schoolchildren could remain calm and safe.

At 08:36 on May 20, an earthquake with a magnitude of 4.8 occurred in Hanyuan County, Ya'an City, Sichuan, and Yingjing County was affected.
