A strong earthquake shook buildings and homes with dozens killed in southwest China.

Footage shows a chandelier rattling while the quake was felt in the 22nd floor of an apartment in Chengdu City, Sichuan province on September 5.

State media reported that at least 65 people were killed and 248 injured while 12 are still missing.

The China Earthquake Networks Centre said the magnitude 6.8 earthquake struck Luding County some 226 kilometres southwest of the capital Chengdu.

The United States Geological Survey placed the magnitude at 6.6, and said the quake hit at a depth of 10 kilometres southeast of Kangding at 4:52 am UTC.

The quake is reportedly the strongest to hit Sichuan since August 2017, when a magnitude 7.0 earthquake rattled Aba prefecture.
