A stray puppy was rescued after being trapped in a sewer for three days in Thailand.

The hapless dog had wandered into a grassy field by the roadside and fallen into a 7ft-deep hole in Chonburi province on May 20.

Villagers who heard the dog crying for help called volunteers to rescue it. However, the team of 10 officers knew that reaching the animal would not be easy as the sewer stretched as far as half a kilometer underground.

Footage shows the team prising the heavy sewer grate open with a crowbar while the terrified puppy howled in anguish. They managed to guide the pooch towards the end of the tunnel, where they pulled it out successfully after two hours.

The weakened female pup shook and had trouble standing on its own as it was placed on the ground. It was only about five months old, and was covered in gunk from staying in the filthy water for three days.

Volunteer Suppakit Nakpum said: ‘We will be carrying the puppy back to the station so it could be fed and showered. I think she must be very hungry as she was stuck for so long.

‘We are naming her Boonrod. We will decide on whether to adopt her or release her after she recovers.’
