A security camera in western India has captured the terrifying moment a wild leopard attacked a pet dog.

Footage captured on June 5 shows the big cat pouncing on the family pet outside a home in the Nashik district of Maharashtra.

Moments later the leopard walks off with the dog in its mouth.

A spokesperson from the forest department called on local residents to "remain indoors at night" due to increased "leopard activity."

Visuals have emerged of a leopard attacking a pet dog in western India's Maharashtra.

The incident took place in Mungsare village in the Nashik district on June 5.

Visuals, captured on CCTV camera, showed the dog sitting on a low boundary wall of a house when suddenly it saw a leopard approaching. The pet dog ran for its life and tried to outsmart the leopard but eventually failed.

After a brief tussle, the leopard left with the dog in its jaws.

According to reports, Pankaj Garg, Deputy Conservator of Forest, Nashik said, "We appeal to the people of Mungsare village to remain indoors at night as leopard activity has increased in this area. People must remain alert."

Instances of leopards entering residential areas is not uncommon in Nashik. In January this year, a leopard was rescued from a residential area of Nashik city in an operation that lasted eight hours. One person was attacked in the incident.
