Anti-military protesters burned down an effigy 'symbolising fake unity' in Myanmar.

Members of the Kachin State Civil Movement (KSCM) torched the statue depicting a grandfather and his three grandsons carrying wood in the Myitkyina Township in Myanmar's Kachin State on June 10.

They claimed the Burmese military had been using the statue as propaganda to inspire unity among the country's ethnic groups despite the ongoing conflict between resistance forces and the state army.

In a statement, the KSCM said: 'People must remember the war victims and the internally displaced people. They need to resist the military dictatorship.

'As the revolution drags on, the people who have lost their unity will continue to protest against the military dictatorship, continue to boycott, and continue with the civil disobedience movement.'

Local media group Kachin News citing Myitkyina residents said the army tried to repair the statue the next day.

The struggle between armed militias and the Burmese military has intensified amid the political turmoil in Myanmar caused by the ousting of former leader Aung San Suu Kyi in February 2021.

Around the country, thousands of civilians are said to have been killed during military crackdowns on protests.
