During a recent safari in the Kruger National Park, we came across a large female white rhino and her calf. The baby rhino was just adorable and we were so happy to see such a tiny rhino in the wild. There was a strong wind blowing on the day and the mother was keeping below the wind by staying in a low laying drainage line with her calf. It was not long before we realised that the mother rhino was not at ease. Suddenly we saw a male rhino appearing from a distance, making his way to the mother and her baby. The reason for the mother rhino’s uneasiness was clear. This male was clearly not related to the mother and her calf and we could see by her behaviour that she was not comfortable with the presence of the intruding male rhino. The mother rhino immediately saw the male rhino as a threat to her calf and started with her intimidating and aggressive behaviour. It started off with the most eerie sounding sounds made by the mother rhino which was a combination of snarling, squealing and wailing sounds. The male rhino got the message and backed off slightly. While the mother rhino and her calf slowly moved away, for some reason the calf decided it was not done yet with the intruding male. To our amazement the rhino calf turned around and started moving in the direction of the intruding bull all by itself. The mother rhino realised what was going on and quickly responded by going straight towards her calf. The most unexpected thing happened after the mother joined her calf. Against all odds the baby rhino suddenly turned around and boldly charged at the male rhino. This was hilarious to watch and couldn’t believe the bravery of the baby rhino. The male rhino got such a fright at that moment. Within seconds the mother rhino was right next to her baby, letting out more intimidating sounds. Together, the mother and her baby charged towards the intruding male which made a quick u turn and ran off. The male rhino disappeared into the bush with the mother and baby rhino hot on his heels.
