Rescue operation underway after fatal flood kills 16 at pilgrimage site in northern India

The operation to rescue victims of the cloud burst resulting in flood near the Amarnath Yatra site in northern India's Jammu and Kashmir is underway.

This happened in the Anantnag district on July 8.

Visuals show water flowing from the higher caves. The rescue officials were seen conducting several operations to save the lives of victims who were affected as a result of the cloudburst. The rescuers tied ropes to lift up the victim's bodies.

It was learnt that not just the Indian army but officials from the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) and also Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP) were carrying out the rescue.

Another visual showed the rescuers escorting pilgrims on rocky terrain. Army dogs were also deployed to check and find out other bodies which could have gotten buried.

According to a report, a total of 16 people have died in this tragedy. Another 65 have been left injured and 40 people are missing. The injured were taken for treatment. The Amarnath Yatra has been temporarily suspended.
