Officials from the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) leading the rescue efforts after a collision occurred between the passenger train and a freight train in Odisha's Balasore district on Friday (June 2), leaving at least 233 people dead and 900 injured.

In the video, rescuers cut through the train coaches to extricate trapped passengers and climbed atop the wreckage to save those stranded.

According to Railway Spokesperson Amitabh Sharma, the rescue operation has been declared complete. However, Narendra Singh, IG Operation of NDRF, stated that the operation is still ongoing.

As of now, the state government has reported 238 fatalities and over 900 injuries. Singh expressed hope that the operation would be concluded by evening.

NDRF deployed nine teams, seven from Odisha and two from West Bengal, to facilitate the rescue efforts. The majority of surviving victims have been transported to nearby hospitals for necessary medical attention.

The rescue teams employed heavy machinery, including cranes and bulldozers, to lift the mangled coaches and rescue victims trapped within. Alongside the NDRF, the scene was teeming with the presence of police personnel, doctors, ambulances, and fire officials. The Indian Air Force (IAF) also deployed 17 helicopters to aid in relief and rescue operations.

Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw announced that a comprehensive "high-level enquiry" would be conducted to determine the cause of this devastating accident. He further assured that ex gratia compensation would be provided to the victims' families. The kin of the deceased will receive Rs 10 lakh (approximately USD 12,135.80), while those who sustained serious injuries will be granted Rs 2 lakh (approximately USD 2,427.16). Compensation of Rs 50,000 (approximately USD 606.78) will be provided to individuals with minor injuries.
