Several lives lost after girder machine collapses in western India

Twenty people died and several others were left injured after a girder machine collapsed in western India's Maharashtra.

This happened in Khutadi Sarlambe village in Shahapur, Thane on August 1. The construction of the third phase of Samruddhi Expressway was going on when this happened.

Visuals showed officials at the spot, conducting a rescue operation. According to a report, among the ones who died included 11 construction workers and five site engineers. The injured have been rushed to the Shahapur Gramin hospital. As soon as the information was received, the fire brigade, police and National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) officials rushed to the spot and saved the trapped with the help of cranes. It was also learnt that six more people are said to be trapped. Two NDRF teams were at the spot with the rescue operation still going on.

Maharashtra Chief minister Eknath Shinde has announced an ex-gratia of Rs 5 lakh ($6,077.05) to the kin of the deceased. Prime Minister Narendra Modi also has expressed condolences towards the victims and announced Rs 2 lakh ($2,430.82) for the kin of the deceased. An investigation has also been launched into this incident.
