Defiant Burmese farmers staged a protest against the military junta in the middle of a rice field in Myanmar.

Footage shows the agricultural workers holding up a large banner emblazoned with the logo of the National League for Democracy (NLD) party during the small demonstration in the Yinmar Pin township of the Sagaing Division on July 8.

While holding clumps of rice plants and doing the iconic three-fingered salute that has become a symbol of resistance, they voiced their support for the NLD, which they said was the duly-elected party in the country instead of the junta.

The NLD is chaired by Burmese democratic icon Aung San Suu Kyi, who was ousted during a military coup in February 2021. The army subsequently seized power, with former general Min Aung Hlaing now heading the State Administration Council.

Fighting between the armed militias and the Burmese military has intensified amid the political turmoil in Myanmar caused by the Suu Kyi's deposition.

Around the country, thousands of civilians are said to have been killed during military crackdowns on anti-junta protests.
