Resistance groups attacked junta-held outposts in strategic parts of Myanmar on Monday.

The Karenni Nationalities Defence Force and People's Defence Force raided the army bases held by Burmese government troops in Pha Song, opposite Thailand's Mae Hong Son province, on April 8.

The township had been occupied for more than two months by Burmese soldiers and sits along a vital supply route from Thailand's border into Loikaw, the capital of Myanmar's Kayah State.

The rebel forces were reported to have prepared manpower and heavy weapons including drones and 81mm mortars for the attack, which allegedly resulted in many casualties on the Burmese military side.

The guerrilla groups claimed the remaining soldiers may surrender soon as their supply routes have been cut off.

Meanwhile, residents fled into the forest to escape the fighting.

Karen defence forces have been seizing numerous Myanmar army bases since 2023, and have taken over nearly all army outposts in Kayah.

With the Burmese army surrounded and unable to send ground reinforcements, they have increasingly relied on aerial assaults that often destroy neighbourhoods and government buildings.

The army has reportedly begun conscripting militia to bolster their forces.

The Karen forced also released pictures of new fighters being trained.

Myanmar has fallen into civil war following the removal of democratically elected leader Aung San Suu Kyi, a Nobel Peace Prize winner, with a murderous military coup in 2021.

Soldiers responded with barbaric force on protesting civilians leading to widespread condemnation and financial sanctions.

Rebel groups and civilian militias around the country have since been locked in a series of ongoing clashes with the ruling military.

Neighbouring Thailand - also run by an unelected party spawned from disgraced former Man City owner Thaksin Shinawatra - has done little to apply pressure on the junta over its atrocities.

Opportunist PM Minister Srettha Thavisin told Reuters this week that 'now is a good time to open talks with Myanmar as the military regime that seized power in a 2021 coup is weakening'.

'Maybe it's time to reach out and make a deal,' he said.
