A giant whale made of hundreds of plastic bottles was displayed in Bangkok's city centre to heighten awareness of the country's waste problem.

The massive sculpture, a creation of artist and social activist Wishulada Panthanovong, stands tall outside the Krungsri Bank in the capital's Ploenchit area.

Another of Wishulada's towering pieces built out of plastic straws and bottles was placed inside the sixth floor of the ICONSIAM department store and reaches up to the mall's ceiling.

Her last installation was also a giant whale and can be found outside the Stock Exchange of Thailand.

In an interview, Wishulada said she hoped her art inspires people to change their way of life to fix the notorious city's garbage problem.

She said: 'I'm just one person doing social work. I want to motivate other people to be part of the solution to our environmental woes. This is a problem that anyone can fix. I want it to look easy to solve.'

Plastic pollution is a threat to marine life but the biggest danger comes from over-fishing, according to the activist group Sea Shepherd.
