A large smoke column from the Sangay volcano was seen from the Amazonia region in Ecuador on Tuesday.

Footage shows the cloud of black ash hanging over the volcano on August 16.

The Geophysical Institute of the National Polytechnic School said the plume reached about two kilometres above the crater, and fell towards several villages in a section of the Sangay National Park.

Seven towns experienced ashfall in Chimborazo province, the agency reported. The active volcano has reportedly been showing increased seismic activity since May 2019.
